CULPEPER — The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing for yet another round of winter weather that is forecast to sweep across western Virginia Sunday night and early Monday morning.

In the Piedmont region precipitation has been falling for much of Sunday. The western area near the Blue Ridge Mountains is seeing a mix of snow and sleet, while farther east it is mostly rain. It is forecast to continue overnight, with areas along the Blue Ridge Mountains likely a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain causing icy roads before turning to rain as temperatures rise through the morning.

Drivers should pay attention to local weather forecasts Sunday evening and Monday morning and drive according to road conditions. If air temperatures fall below freezing pavement temperatures are also expected to drop, creating the potential for icy conditions to develop on roads early Monday morning. 

Icing typically occurs first on bridges, overpasses, ramps and in shaded areas and in the western areas along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. VDOT crews will be on duty overnight to monitor conditions and treat any slick roads with salt and sand to improve traction and melt ice.

When winter weather arrives, residents and motorists should plan travel ahead of time, check road conditions, prepare an emergency car kit, follow forecasts and announcements and limit travel based on conditions.
