FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers are asked to be alert for additional construction activity on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area this spring as work intensifies to build a 10-mile extension of 95 Express Lanes.

Tree clearing, grading, and other construction activities are starting at new locations in the interstate median and along the shoulders for the 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension.

Beginning the week of April 27, crews will have tree clearing underway in the median near Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) and along I-95 southbound near Exit 133 (Route 17). Construction continues to build a new Truslow Road overpass of I-95 between these interchanges.

Drivers should watch for trucks entering or exiting at various construction entrances throughout the entire Express Lanes work zone, which is between Exit 148 (Russell Road) to the vicinity of Exit 133 (Route 17) in Stafford County.

Major construction began in July 2019 to build two reversible high-occupancy toll lanes in the median of I-95 approximately 10 miles south of Route 610 (Garrisonville Road) in Stafford to the vicinity of Route 17 (I-95 Exit 133). Project features include:

• Two reversible high-occupancy toll lanes in the existing median of I-95
• The lanes will connect to the I-95 southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project and the I-95 northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project
• Additional access to 95 Express Lanes will be added near the Route 17 and Route 630 (Courthouse Road) I-95 interchanges in Stafford, and near the Russell Road interchange at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Prince William County
• New I-95 overpass bridges on Truslow Road and American Legion Road in Stafford

The extended Express Lanes are anticipated to open to traffic in late 2022. All work related to the project is scheduled to be completed in 2023.

Drivers are encouraged to limit distractions and give the road ahead their full attention while traveling in the work zone. New signs were recently installed reminding drivers that it is unlawful in Virginia to hold a handheld personal communications device while driving a moving motor vehicle in a highway work zone.

Transurban is managing construction, and will operate the Fredericksburg Extension as part of the 95 Express Lanes upon completion of the project. The design-build contractor is a joint venture between Branch Civil and Flatiron.
