Final set of bridge beams to be set over I-95 travel lanes as crews progress toward Feb. 2024 completion of new, wider Route 17 (Mills Drive) overpass

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Brief overnight traffic stops on Interstate 95 northbound and southbound in Spotsylvania County are scheduled next week as crews begin to place the final set of beams needed to build the new Route 17 (Mills Drive) overpass across the interstate.

Drivers can expect lane closures and intermittent full traffic stops near mile markers 124-125 in Spotsylvania, and on Mills Drive, at the following dates and times:

Monday, Aug. 7 – Thursday, Aug. 10 (ending early Friday, Aug. 11)

Interstate 95 Northbound

  • 9 p.m. – Single lane closed
  • 10 p.m. – Two lanes closed
  • 11:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. – Full, intermittent traffic stops for up to 30 min. intervals
  • 4:30 a.m. – All northbound lanes open

Route 17 (Mills Drive)

Glenwood Drive/Overview Drive to Latitude Street (shopping center entrance)

  • 11 p.m. – 4 a.m. – One-way, alternating traffic crossing the Route 17 overpass. Full intermittent traffic stops for up to 15 min. intervals during beam placement. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by a flagging crew.

Thursday, Aug. 10 – Friday, Aug. 11

Interstate 95 Southbound

  • 9 p.m. – Single lane closed
  • 10 p.m. – Two lanes closed
  • 11:30 p.m. – 3:30 a.m. – Full, intermittent traffic stops for up to 30 min. intervals
  • 4:30 a.m. – All southbound lanes open

When construction on this $23.5 million project is finished in Feb. 2024, Route 17 will be expanded to four travel lanes from Latitude Street to just east of the Hospital Boulevard and Germanna Point Drive intersection.

The new interstate overpass will have four travel lanes. A shared-use path for pedestrians will be built along the southern side of Route 17 and sidewalk will be built along the northern side of Route 17. Pedestrian crossing equipment and crosswalks will be added at intersection crossing locations.
