VDOT News - Hampton Roads

SURRY COUNTY – Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are set to begin construction on the Route 10 (Colonial Trail East) and Route 617 (White Marsh Road/Bacons Castle Trail) Intersection Improvements Project in Surry County starting next week.  

Howard Brothers Contractor, Inc. was awarded the $1.99 million construction contract to increase safety and improve operational conditions at the intersection of Route 10 and Route 617 through the construction of new turn lanes and implementation of sight distance improvements. VDOT issued the contractor the notice to proceed with construction activities, starting with the placement of work zone signs scheduled to begin as early as Nov. 27.  

The project includes:

• creation of new left-turn lanes from Route 10 to Route 617 toward Bacons Castle Trail and from Route 10 to Route 617 toward Wakefield, 
• addition of a new right-turn lane from Route 617 to Route 10 north toward Surry,
• shoulder improvements on all four quadrants of the intersection,
• land clearing to increase sight distance at the intersection for crossing traffic,
• and installation of updated traffic signage at and approaching the intersection. 

During construction, the contractor plans to implement long-term shoulder closures on Route 10, temporary single-lane closures under flagger control, and traffic shifts to facilitate construction activities.

Access to all private property and businesses on Route 10 and Route 617 will be maintained at all times. Drivers must reduce speed and stay alert when traveling through a work zone.  

Construction is estimated to be complete as early as fall 2024. All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions.
