CONTINUOUS, LONG-TERM LANE CLOSURE TO START ON I-64 EAST IN HAMPTON
Lane reduction on I-64 east between Rip Rap Road and Mallory Street to begin as early as July 16

HAMPTON – Motorists on I-64 will continue to encounter additional lane reductions, narrowing and traffic shifts in both directions between Rip Rap Road and Mallory Street (exit 268) while construction on the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton segment continues.

Starting as early as Sunday, July 16 at 10 p.m., I-64 east will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes, and the travel lanes will shift away from the median between Rip Rap Road and Settlers Landing Road (exit 267).

This new traffic pattern follows the continuous, single-lane closure on I-64 west that started July 10 between Mallory Street (exit 268) and Rip Rap Road.

Starting as early as mid-August, traffic on I-64 west will shift onto the eastbound Hampton River bridge while the westbound bridge is under construction.

These lane reductions are estimated to be in place into 2026, and additional traffic shifts will occur as the Hampton River bridges undergo construction.

Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.

The HREL Hampton Segment will ultimately become a part of the overall HREL Network, a continuous, 46-mile network of Express Lanes in each traffic direction on I-64, from east of Denbigh Boulevard in Newport News to the I-64/I-264/I-664 Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake. The HREL Network is designed to transport more motorists through the region while helping to alleviate congestion and allowing motorists more travel options.

Motorists should plan their drive with VDOT’s free traffic information tools:
