IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE ALONG ROUTE 654, SINAI ROAD
VDOT, Town of South Boston and Halifax County cooperatively seek safety solution

LYNCHBURG-Interim improvements will be made along Route 654, Sinai Road in Halifax County to improve existing conditions for pedestrian travel. These improvements will afford the county an opportunity to apply for future Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) funds to support other pedestrian-oriented projects, if desired.

The work, paid for with Halifax County’s Secondary Six-Year Improvement Funds, will shift the travel lanes along Route 654 several feet to the east from approximately Westside Drive to Greens Folly Road and widen the shoulder along the west side of the roadway. In addition, the shoulder will be paved and a curb/flexible bollard system installed to separate the travel lanes and the shoulder area and a crosswalk. All work should be done in existing right of way. Signs and pavement markings will be added for pedestrian travel. The goal is to complete the interim improvements, pending weather delays, by the end of this calendar year.

Meanwhile, a Speed Study has been completed to determine the appropriate speed limit in this area considering the planned improvements. In addition, a Town of Halifax Special Area Study which will include Sinai Road as part of the overall roadway network supporting Routes 360 and 501 will be conducted by Michael Baker International. The Baker study which will take approximately 11 months, to include stakeholder meetings and public outreach will review existing conditions and provide recommendations to support a multi-modal transportation system that provides for safe and efficient travel.
