ARLINGTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation is holding a public information meeting Thursday, Nov. 14 on a study of potential safety and operational improvements for less than a mile of Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) between Glebe Road (Route 120) and Fillmore Street. 

The study is being completed through the Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, which aims to identify cost-effective measures intended to improve safety and reduce congestion.

The concepts being studied will be based on public input and may include improving turn lanes, traffic signal timing and operations, and access management for properties and streets along the corridor.

Other concepts being evaluated may also include:

• Pedestrian, bicycle and transit enhancements
• Turn restrictions
• Innovative Intersections (potential examples include Quadrant Roadway and Restricted Crossing U-Turn)

Stop by between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 125 South Old Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22204 to learn more about the study and to provide your input. A short presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and VDOT staff will be available to answer questions. 

A key part of this study is public input. Residents and travelers of the corridor in the study area are asked to take a short survey now available for responses on the study website. You may also give comments at the meeting or submit them by Monday, Nov. 25 to Mr. Bobby Mangalath, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030.  

A follow-up public information meeting to present potential recommendations will be held near the end of the study, which is scheduled for completion in spring 2020.
