Demolition Activity on Old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 Continues Next Week, October 31-November 5
Nightly lane closures planned on I-66 East and West approaching Gallows Road October 25-November 2
FAIRFAX – Pre-demolition activities on the old Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 will continue during the overnight and daytime hours next week, Sunday, October 31, through Friday, November 5, with multi-lane closures on I-66 East and West. The Gallows Road Bridge is being replaced as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes.
Crews are preparing the old bridge deck for demolition by removing railing and fencing, and constructing a platform under the old bridge to protect the Metrorail Orange Line tracks and the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station. Upon completion of the protective platform, crews will begin daytime operations saw cutting the section of the bridge over WMATA facilities in the center of I-66. Upcoming Demolition Activity for the Week of October 31:
- Pre-demolition activities will continue during the week with daytime and overnight work that includes removal of railing, fencing, and bridge parapets, and construction of a platform under the old bridge to protect the WMATA facilities.
- Beginning during the daytime hours on or about, Friday, November 5, crews will start demolition of the old bridge deck with saw cutting of the section over the Metrorail Orange Line and Dunn Loring Metrorail Station.
- Portions of the bridge directly over I-66 will need to be demolished during overnight hours, when multiple lanes can be closed on I-66 to safely accommodate this work.
- Demolition activities will occur during daytime hours when feasible to minimize impacts to the nearby communities.

What Drivers Should Expect:
Sunday, October 31; Monday, November 1; Thursday, November 4; and Friday, November 5
I-66 East from Cedar Lane to Gallows Road
- Three lanes will be closed Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday night from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
- Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. (9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday).
Tuesday, November 2, and Wednesday, November 3
I-66 West from I-495 to Gallows Road
- Three lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
- Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from I-495 South to I-66 West
- The ramp will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
- All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 West
- The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.
- Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.
- The ramp will reopen by 5 a.m.
All work is weather dependent, and schedules may shift if inclement conditions occur.
Drivers should be alert for changing traffic patterns on Gallows Road near I-66 as construction continues through 2022. Drivers are reminded to slow down and pay attention to lane markings and roadway signs at all times.
The southbound travel lanes on Gallows Road shifted to the new Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 on Sunday evening, October 24, followed by the opening of the sidewalk on the new bridge on Thursday, October 28. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east side of Gallows Road and the new bridge during demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new span over I-66. Pedestrian detours will cross Gallows Road using the crosswalks at Cottage Street and Avenir Place/Bellforest Drive. The northbound Gallows Road lanes shifted to the new bridge on October 14.
The Gallows Road Bridge over I-66 is being reconstructed as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. The bridge is being lengthened, widened, raised, and shifted to the east to accommodate the new Express Lanes and provide room for future improvements along Gallows Road.
