FAIRFAX – Demolition of the old Route 50 West bridge over I-66 will begin tonight, June 29, with ramp and lane closures at the I-66/Route 50 Interchange. On June 30 and July 1, all lanes of I-66 West approaching Route 50 are planned to close overnight as work progresses. Traffic will be detoured using Route 50 and Route 608 (West Ox Road). The Route 50 Interchange is being rebuilt as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

Drivers traveling on I-66 during this time should expect delays and should consider using alternate routes. 

During the nightly closures, demolition crews will remove portions of the old Route 50 West bridge structure over the westbound I-66 travel lanes and the ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West. Overall demolition of the old Route 50 East and West bridges over I-66 is anticipated to take approximately 25 nights of demolition. What Neighbors Should Expect:

• Demolition work will occur during overnight hours throughout the week, Tuesday night, June 29, through Thursday night, July 1, with removal of the concrete bridge deck using jackhammers, saw cutters, and hoe rams, followed by removal of steel bridge beams. 
• No demolition work is scheduled to occur over the Independence Day holiday weekend.
• Daytime and nighttime demolition work will continue the week of July 5. 

What Drivers Should Expect:

Tuesday, June 29
I-66 West at Route 50

• I-66 West will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching Route 50 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from Route 50 West to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Wednesday, June 30, and Thursday, July 1
I-66 West at Route 50

• All I-66 West travel lanes will be closed at Route 50 from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.
• All traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 50 West, continue to Route 608 South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.
• Traffic will be detoured farther west to Route 608 South, stay to the right to Route 50 East, then follow signs to I-66 West.

Ramp from I-66 West to Route 50 East

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.
• Traffic will be directed to exit the interstate to Route 50 West, continue to Route 608 South, then stay to the right to Route 50 East.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled if inclement conditions occur.

A new westbound Route 50 bridge over I-66 opened to traffic on June 27, allowing crews to begin demolition of the old westbound Route 50 crossing. Portions of the old bridge that are over I-66 must be demolished during nighttime hours when travel lanes can be closed. Eastbound Route 50 traffic will be shifted to a new Route 50 East bridge over I-66 in the coming weeks, with demolition of the old eastbound bridge to follow. 

The I-66/Route 50 Interchange is being rebuilt to add Express Lanes access to and from the east and to construct a new shared-use path as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
