FAIRFAX – Lane closures, traffic stoppages, and ramp closures on I-66 East continue during the overnight hours this week, Monday, November 8, through Thursday, November 11, as bridge beam installation continues at the I-66/I-495 Interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

On Monday and Tuesday nights, I-66 East will be reduced to a single travel lane during the overnight hours. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., all lanes of I-66 East over I-495 will be closed. Traffic will be detoured using I-495 and Route 7 (Leesburg Pike).

The ramps from I-495 North to I-66 East and from the 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 East will also be closed each night. On Monday night, the ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North will be closed. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, the ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West will also be closed. Detours will be posted. 

Drivers traveling on I-66 and I-495 during this time should expect delays and consider using alternate routes. 

Crews are installing beams for a new flyover ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.

All work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled should inclement conditions occur.

Monday, November 8
I-66 East over I-495 North

• Two lanes on I-66 East approaching I-495 North will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages during the overnight hours.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
• Traffic will be detoured to I-495 South, exit to Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard) East, stay to the right to Fairview Park, take the left fork to Fairview Park North, bear left at the traffic signal, then stay to the right following signs to I-495 North.
• The ramp will reopen by 4 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West

• One lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East

• The ramp will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
• Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 East, travel about one mile, then follow signs to I-66 East.
• The ramp will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 East

• The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

Tuesday, November 9
Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West

• One lane will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
• Drivers should expect periodic stoppages between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
• All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. 

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East

• The ramp will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
• Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 East, travel about one mile, then follow signs to I-66 East.
• The ramp will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

Wednesday, November 10, and Thursday, November 11
I-66 East over I-495 North

• Two lanes on I-66 East approaching I-495 North will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. nightly.
• Each night between 10:30 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. I-66 East over I-495 North will be closed.
• All eastbound I-66 traffic will be directed to I-495 North, exit to Route 7 East, travel about one mile, and then follow signs to I-66 East.
• All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West

• The ramp will be closed from 10:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly.
• Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 West, stay to the right to I-495 South, and then exit to I-66 West. 
• The ramp will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

Ramp from I-495 North to I-66 East

• The ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. nightly.
• Traffic will be directed to continue north to Route 7 East, travel about one mile, then follow signs to I-66 East.
• The ramp will reopen by 4:30 a.m.

Ramp from 495 Express Lanes North to I-66 East

• The ramp will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. nightly.
• Overhead variable message boards will direct traffic to alternate routes.

The I-66/I-495 Interchange is being modified with several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Improvements at the interchange include adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as building new connections between express and general purpose lanes.
